Bishop's Crown chilli, also known as Bishop's Hat, Christmas Bell or Joker's Hat, is a unique variety of Capsicum baccatum characterised by its unmistakable shape resembling a bishop's mitre.
Appearance and size: The plant reaches a height of 45-65 cm and has a compact, bushy habit, making it ideal for growing in containers on terraces or balconies. The fruits are exotically shaped, bright red with a crisp texture and weigh around 20-25 grams. Each plant can produce 3-4 kg of fresh fruit in a season lasting approximately 4-6 months.
Flavour and pungency: Bishop's Crown offers a sweet, almost floral flavour with a moderate pungency of between 5 000-30 000 SHU. This pungency is comparable to mild hot peppers, making it suitable for those who prefer a milder spiciness.
Cultivation: this variety is easy to grow and thrives well in our climatic conditions. The ripening period is approximately 90-100 days from seed germination. The plant prefers a sunny location and well-drained soil. Its compact size makes it ideal for growing in containers on terraces or balconies.
Its sweet taste and mild pungency make it ideal for direct consumption, adding to salads, salsas or sauces. They can also be pickled or dried for later use. Their attractive shape also adds an aesthetic element to any dish.
