The fruits are oblong, 10-15 cm long and grow downwards. Initially deep purple, they gradually turn shades of creamy yellow, salmon and orange before turning deep red at full maturity. This colour transition makes the plant extremely decorative, as the fruits can be seen at different stages of ripening at the same time.

Hotness and flavour: Buena Mulata has a hotness of up to 80 000 SHU, making it a medium hot chilli pepper. The flavour changes as it matures - while the purple fruits offer a stronger and sharper flavour, the red ones are sweeter and fuller. This variation allows the fruit to be used in a variety of culinary applications according to preference.

Growing: The plant grows to a height of 80-110 cm and is quite robust. The ripening period is approximately 100 days from planting. It requires a sunny location and well-drained, fertile soil for optimum growth. It is recommended to sow the seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost and transplant the seedlings outdoors after the frost has passed, when night temperatures do not fall below 10 °C. Regular watering and fertilisation promote a rich harvest.

History: This variety has a rich history dating back to the 1940s. It was discovered in the seed collection of H. Ralph Weaver, who received the seeds from African-American artist Horace Pippin in exchange for bee stings as therapy for his World War I wounds. Pippin was known for his interest in gardening and seed collecting, which contributed to the preservation of this unique variety.
