Chilli Habanero Red (Capsicum chinense) is a variety of hot pepper originating in the Amazon region, which has spread all over the world via Mexico. It is valued for its bright red fruit, intense hotness and distinctive fruity flavour.
Appearance and size: The plant grows up to 120 cm tall and has a compact, bushy habit. The fruits are wrinkled, conical, 2,5-4 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. They are green when immature and turn deep red when ripe.
Heat level and flavour: Habanero Red is one of the very hot peppers with a hotness in the range of 150 000-325 000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). The flavour is distinctly fruity with hints of citrus and tropical fruits, adding a unique depth and complexity to the dish.
Growing: This variety prefers a warm, sunny site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5-6). Ripening time is approximately 90-95 days from planting. Plants are suitable for growing in containers and in beds. Regular watering is important, but overwatering can lead to bitter tasting fruit. In colder regions, greenhouse or hothouse growing is recommended.
Use in the kitchen: its intense pungency and fruity flavour make it ideal for hot sauces, salsas, marinades and spices. They can also be dried and used as a spice to flavour various dishes. It is advisable to wear gloves when handling the fruit and take care not to irritate the skin or eyes.
