Chilli Habanero Chocolate (Capsicum chinense) is a late variety of hot pepper originating in Mexico, known for its dark brown fruits and intense spiciness.
Appearance and size: The fruits are 3 cm wide and 4-5 cm long, with a characteristic wrinkled surface and dark brown colour when fully ripe.
Heat level and taste: Habanero Chocolate has a hotness of up to 425 000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units), making it a very hot variety. The flavour is fruity with subtle smoky notes, adding depth and complexity to a variety of dishes.
Growing: This variety has a longer ripening period, approximately 60 days from fruit set. It is suitable for growing in shelters such as greenhouses or polytunnels, where temperature and humidity can be better controlled. The plant prefers a warm, sunny site with well-drained soil.
Use in the kitchen: its strong pungency and rich flavour make it ideal for making hot sauces, salsas, marinades and spices. They can also be dried and used as a seasoning for flavouring various dishes.
