Chilli Thunder Mountain Longhorn (Capsicum annuum) is a fascinating variety of pepper originating from Guizhou Province in China, an area surrounded by the Leigongshan Mountains, which translates to "Thunder Mountain". This variety is valued for its exceptionally long fruit, which can reach over 30 cm in length, and for its rich flavour.
Appearance and size: The plant grows up to 120 cm tall and has a bushy habit. The fruits are thin, often curved or twisted, resembling the shape of cayenne pepper but much longer. The colour changes from green to deep red as it ripens.
Heat level and flavour: Thunder Mountain Longhorn has a medium heat level comparable to cayenne pepper, approximately 20,000-30,000 Scoville units (SHU). The flavour is complex, with subtle sweet and smoky notes, making it ideal for a variety of culinary applications.
Cultivation: This variety is easy to grow and thrives in warm climates. The plants are very productive and can reach a height of up to 120 cm. The ripening period is approximately 80-89 days from planting. A sunny site and well-drained soil are recommended for optimum growth.
Use in the kitchen: Prepared in this way, they are often used as a condiment or base for sauces. Fresh fruits can also be used in salsas, marinades or as a savoury addition to various dishes.
